Anybody have thoughts or info on rotating dog foods. The person I buy my foods
from (she sells better foods) rotates for her dogs every three months. I also
just talked to another person who is going to do the same. It sounds like an
interesting idea to me, as long as the foods are high quality, to balance
whatever they could be lacking or getting too much of in one food. It also could
prevent a problem if it turns out that something with the food later turned out
to be not good or not balanced.
Well.. Riot gets this regardless lol
He wont eat one brand of food for more then 5 months lol
When he was little he was eating Innova, then he was eating Solid Gold, then he
was eating Fromm Duck and Potato then he switched to Innova EVO, then we
switched from that to California Natural, Now hes deciding that he likes Orijin
better and will spit out his California Natural lol
IMO, as long as you can switch them gradually - its fine to rotate the higher
end food around
I switch every 1-2 weeks. I buy two large bags of high quality kibble (right now
its Orijen and Innova Evo) and rotate back and forth until they are gone then I
get another two bags of the same or a different brand.
We rotate each day between two open bags of different kibble. When one runs out
we go buy another brand. Currently eating Solid Gold and Royal Canin. Natural
Balance is on deck and Orijen is scheduled to move into the rotation after that.
We change cold turkey without any issues. I buy the small bags (4-5 lb) and keep
them sealed as tightly as I can.
CeCe's daily raw meal alternates between chicken, pork and beef.
Her table scraps vary with whatever we are eating that meal.
He won't eat?
About two weeks ago I switched the dogs from free-fed to a feeding schedule.
Lizzie's done great with it. Eats on time and everything.
Major, well up in till about a 3 days ago he was doing fine. But he will usually
come around and eat. Well today he won't eat at his feeding time. He didn't have
breakfast this morning because after 30 mins of it being down he still wouldn't
eat. And I always have something on the food like eggs, chicken broth, or the
like. So I fed him his supper a few minutes ago with chicken broth on it, but
only ate a few bites.
So what can i do to "make" him eat at the right time?
It's my opinion that a dog will eat when they get hungry enough. The more you
add to entice, the pickier they get. So he's been eating at the scheduled times
for three weeks and is now starting to not want to eat at those times? The only
way to train his stomache to be hungry at certain times is to keep up the
schedule you are on, picking the food up 20 minutes after setting it
down...eaten or not. There may be days he's just not as hungry. He may not be
feeling that great today, I'd watch his other actions (BMs and urination)
closely to see if they've changed at all. But a healthy dog will not starve
itself too long before giving into their growling stomach. He may be protesting
a bit but I'm sure he'll get over it and fall in line with Lizzie.
You are supposed to pick the food up after about 20 minutes or so, and that is
that.........if he didn't eat then, he will be MORE than ready to eat at the
next scheduled time Unless of course he isn't feeling well, but you know your
dog and know the signs of that.
I know it isn't easy to do, I had to do it with Orson once........it killed me
thinking he was going to be hungry through the day.......but trust me it worked
They won't starve missing one meal.
